As if golf wasn’t in deep enough disarray already, in the midst of the power struggle between the professional tours from the US (PGA Tour), Europe (DP World Tour) and Saudi Arabia (LIV), the rules have now unnecessarily opened a second front.
The American USGA and the European R&A have decided that in the near future golf balls will only be allowed to play with balls that fly less far than before. Why? Because some professionals are now producing uncomfortably long tee shots (average on the PGA Tour: 275 meters) and thus embarrassing the architects of the golf courses: the land is becoming scarce.
Recreational players are punished
The rule keepers’ antidote is a careless all-round attack, an insidious attack on millions of amateur golfers, throwing out the baby with the bathwater. As if, for example, the occasional golfer DK van Z. has the problem that his ball flies too far. We recreational hackers are being punished for the extraordinary skills of a few dozen professionals who tee off too far on a few golf courses. Why don’t the idiots just introduce a special ball for the pros? What’s a player who hits the golf ball like he’s about to kill his dinner supposed to do with a ball that doesn’t go that far? More is better, we already learned that at school.
Do you want to play ice hockey with a foam puck?
Imagine if international hockey officials replaced the galvanized rubber puck with a foam puck just because a few NHL ice masters complained that their nets were constantly being shot out.
Hundreds of thousands of recreational players would run away from hockey, just as my golf clubs end up in the scrap metal at the next opportunity. Promise.
