Eseosa Aigbogun (30) will wear the Nati jersey for the 100th time on Tuesday. Officially it is only her 99th international match, because the test match a year ago during Nielsen’s farewell against Denmark was subsequently not recognized by UEFA because there were too many changes. Nevertheless: The match against Italy is special for the full-back, as she has been living in the southern neighboring country since this summer. After five years in Paris, Aigbogun moved to AS Roma.

The Zurich resident is in love with the Eternal City – not only on a sporting level, but also on a cultural level. “When you walk through the city you have the feeling that you are where it all started. You can get lost there.” The cultural aspect certainly played a role in Aigbogun’s choice of club. But there are also more everyday things, such as the weather or the kitchen. “The food is great. And I’m glad it’s much warmer, that makes me happy,” says Aigbogun.

Top address in Europe

Aigbogun hasn’t had much time for sightseeing lately as football also dominates her daily life in Rome. And this one has been clocked. Roma started the season with nine wins from nine games and also got off to the desired start in the Champions League with four points. Almost always in the base: Eseosa Aigbogun. «Everything is much more professional here. During training there are four coaches on the field and everyone has their own responsibility. It’s a lot of fun.”

The fun in the national team has been limited lately due to the negative results and atmospheric disturbances. Aigbogun knows that after the unloved Inka Grings (45) was kicked out, the players now have a responsibility themselves. A start has been made with the sensational victory over Sweden. The long-term goal is the European Championship at home in June 2025. “Every match, every training contributes to our success at the European Championship,” said Aigbogun.

Voss-Tecklenburg as main sponsor

By moving to AS Roma she has taken a step towards being ready for the home tournament in two years. “She has developed over all these years and is now at a top club. She deserves that,” says Nati colleague Noelle Maritz (27). Off the field, Aigbogun is a person with a heart, someone who wouldn’t hurt a fly. “But on the field she is uncompromising,” said Maritz. Interim coach Reto Gertschen (58) paints the same picture of the defender: reserved next to her, grippy and aggressive on the field.

Aigbogun calls her biggest supporter Martina Voss-Tecklenburg (55), under whom she made her debut in the national team in 2013. “She has brought me personally very far, even though it was not always easy.” Tempi passati, because Aigbogun does not dwell on the past when it comes to football. In complete contrast to her excursions through her new home city of Rome.
