Alex Fiva (37) has to accept a setback in his comeback after he tore his cruciate ligament. The Eastern Swiss freestyle skier, 2021 world champion and 2022 Olympic silver medalist, only finished 35th on Tuesday in qualifying for Thursday’s World Cup race in Val Thorens.

Fiva can do better on Wednesday, because then the decision for the second race will be made on Friday at the World Cup opener in France.

Three Swiss bright spots

From a Swiss perspective there are also bright spots on the first day. Sven Liechti (22), who has never finished better than 38th in the World Championship, is the second fastest. Among the women, Fanny Smith (31) and Talina Gantenbein (25) took second and third place behind Sweden’s Sandra Näslund (27). (SDA)
