Dennis Hediger is no longer the coach of FC Basel’s U21 team.

In the summer, Dennis Hediger took over the second team of FC Basel and more than five months later his time as U21 coach has already come to an end. As Bebbi announced on Monday afternoon, she and the 37-year-old are going their separate ways, effective immediately.

This decision was made by the youth department management after analyzing the first half of the season in the Promotion League. “In several conversations we had with Dennis, we came to the conclusion that we have fundamentally different views on the philosophy and direction of our U21,” says youth director Daniel Stucki. The current position in the table (17 out of 18) did not play a role, only the desired strategy.

Hediger joined FCB’s junior department in 2021 and coached first the U16 and then the U18 team. With the latter he became Swiss champion last season.

Club icon takes over

Mario Cantaluppi (49), who previously called the shots for the U19 team, takes over from the former Thun professional. With this he reached the eighth finals of the Youth League (Junior Champions League) last week. In this competition, he will continue to lead the team despite his involvement with the U21s, the FCB announced.

Stucki: “With Mario we have been able to bring in an extremely loyal head coach who has an incredible amount of red-blue DNA and a clear plan where we want to go with our Promotion League team.” During his playing days, Cantaluppi played 273 matches for the Basel team and won three championships with them (2002, 2004 and 2005).
