It is a scene that will go down in the history of German football and will probably not be missing from any annual overview: in the Hamburg city derby between Hamburger SV and FC St. Pauli in the Second Bundesliga, Daniel Heuer Fernandes (31) scores a strange own goal.
The HSV goalkeeper wants to clear a risky backpass from defender Guilherme Ramos (26) in the 27th minute. Unfortunately, the ball bounces right in front of the goal and instead of shooting the ball out of the penalty area as planned, Heuer Fernandes hammers the ball under the crossbar from close range to make it 0-2. At that moment, St. Pauli was already ahead thanks to a goal by Jackson Irvine (30) in the 15th minute.
The unlucky guy tries to explain the situation after the match: “I get the ball in the back and want to shoot it away from the line. Then the ball bounces in front of me and I hit it into my own goal.” For Heuer Fernandes it is the first own goal in the 343rd league match of his career. “That is of course a great shame. I also imagined it differently. But something like that happens in football and you cannot undo that,” said the 31-year-old.
“Cheer up, Ferro!”
HSV coach Tim Walter (48) takes the unfortunate action with humor. “It was slapstick. “That is one of the funniest scenes of the year and the highlights,” says Walter after the match. HSV striker Robert Glatzel (29) also supports his goalkeeper: “I can’t even count how many times he has saved our asses. So it’s not a problem at all.” Hamburger SV tries to cheer up its goalkeeper on social media. “We have already won so many games. Keep your head up, Ferro!”, writes the third-placed player in the Second Bundesliga on his X channel.
There is scorn and ridicule for Heuer Fernandes from St. Pauli’s opponents, who boo the goalkeeper every time he touches the ball during the match. “That doesn’t matter to me. That exists in football. I noticed and heard that, but nothing more,” says Heuer Fernandes. Even more fun was that the HSV fans supported him with chants during the match and celebrated after the final whistle .
Draw with the first in the table
Heuer Fernandes can be happy with the conciliatory end to the evening: Thanks to a strong comeback in the second half, HSV can avoid a defeat in the city derby. Thanks to goals from Robert Glatzel (58th) and Immanuel Pherai (60th), HSV fought for a 2-2 draw against first-placed St. Pauli. Thanks to the points win, Heuer Fernandes probably had a quieter night after his misstep. (mbi)
