In early December, after the European Championship draw, they wanted to conduct the in-depth analysis of the national team and make the Yakin decision. After all, it only lasted a few days. The decision was made on November 28.
YB sports director Steve von Bergen told the “Berner Zeitung” that they would sit down with coach Raphael Wicky in January to talk about the future.
Wicky achieved two top goals
It is strange that it takes so long for a coach to achieve all his goals, with one exception: last season Wicky missed the Conference League in a penalty shootout against the big name Andlecht. On the contrary: no coach has ever left the Champions League before. Neither Gerry Seoane nor David Wagner. And YB has achieved the double just once in the five championship seasons since 2018 – in 2020 under Seoane.
Hütter’s contract was even extended in November
YB extended the contract with Lucerne on December 7 when the situation was the same: the contract expires at the end of the season. But that was before YB qualified for the round of 16 of the Europa League against Cluj. And Seoane’s predecessor Adi Hütter was even extended on November 9. That was in 2017 and YB was probably seven points ahead in the table, but was winless in the Europa League after four matchdays and had only collected three points.
The Upper Valais is somewhat offended
Wicky, for his part, is the leader in points lost and has taken YB to the Europa League play-offs. This raises the suspicion that those responsible for YB wanted to wait for exactly this last match against Red Star Belgrade and then also the two upcoming top fights – against Servette, who is already unbeaten for 10 matches (!), and against St. Gallen – before they get involved in the idea of renewing the contract.
Wicky is slightly irritated by this thought: “I never felt like my future or my work was reduced to this game or judged by it. And when someone does that, I can’t understand it. If someone reduces 17 months of work to a game, then we are not in the reality of it all.”
The coach enjoys going to work
Wicky does not answer the question of whether he wants to stay at YB with a simple yes. He says: “I am very happy here and enjoy going to work every day. I have six months left on my contract and I don’t need a two-and-a-half-year contract.”
In addition, extremely important weeks were coming up, therefore there was no time frame. “In recent months I have not thought about an extension. So there was no need to talk about it.”
But simply: the national team has shown how much faster everything can happen.
