Why is the World Cup taking place in Singapore?

A World Cup in Singapore, Southeast Asia, may seem surprising at first glance. The floorball stronghold is clearly Europe. There has never been a non-European world champion team. But Singapore has been a member of the international floorball federation for almost thirty years. As the host country, the city-state automatically qualifies for the final tournament. But the team also regularly secures a place in the World Cup via the regular route. Singapore is currently ranked 13th in the world.

Singapore and Switzerland – was there anything there?

It has been almost twenty years, but the Swiss actually celebrated their first and only World Cup title in Singapore. In 2005, the team won its last match against Finland 4 to 3.

Who are the favorites?

The Swedes are a force in floorball, you can’t ignore it. They won the title at the last eight (!) World Championships. A series that is unparalleled. Finland – or Switzerland – could trip them up in the hunt for gold. Besides Sweden, they are the only two countries that have ever become world champions.

What’s in store for Switzerland?

As the current number three in the world, Switzerland has to play for medals. Reaching the semi-finals is therefore a must. At the last five World Championships, the Swiss have won four bronze medals and one silver medal.

How is the Swiss team structured?

After the last World Cup in 2021, a lot changed at the Swiss national team. Experienced players such as Captain Flurina Marti and record player Tanja Stella (135 performances) announced their retirement. Nine World Cup debutants must now replace the lost experience with humor and a breath of fresh air. Thanks to goalkeeper Monika Schmid (World Cup no. 7) and striker Corin Rüttimann (World Cup no. 8), the young players can still count on the peace and quiet of the veterans.

How and when can I watch national team matches?

In Singapore, the group matches take place in the evening. Due to the eight-hour time difference, the kick-off in this country will take place in the morning. SRF 2 broadcasts all Nati games live. Switzerland starts against Norway on Saturday at 10 a.m., followed on Sunday by the first highlight match against number two world champions Finland.
