The future of the national coach must now become clear this week: if Yakin flies to the group draw, he will fly to the European Championship

Just a week ago, SFV president Dominique Blanc and Nati director Pierluigi Tami said in Bucharest that a detailed analysis would follow the unsatisfactory qualifying campaign in December – and that the fate of coach Murat Yakin would be decided.

The bosses at the time ignored the fact that the draw for the European Championship groups would take place on December 2 – and risked exposing themselves to ridicule: namely if Yakin was fired after the draw. At the same time, the stalling tactic would not be very respectful to the coach.

The decision will be made this week

But now there is a change. Corresponding reports from “Nau” and “CH Media” coincide with the information from Blick: The urgency of the issue has motivated those responsible to take action. Meetings and discussions have been taking place on the association’s carpet for days. The answer to the trainer’s question must now be found before the Swiss delegation travels to the group draw.

According to information from Blick, it is now certain that if Yakin flies to Hamburg, he will also fly to the European Championships in the summer of 2024. And that as coach of the Swiss national team. If not, he will be denied the harvest of the tough qualification.

The Central Board meets on Friday, December 1. The final decision will be taken at the latest, if not sooner. According to the statutes, the highest SFV committee determines Yakin’s fate. If Nati director Tami submits a request to divorce the coach early, the seven-member committee must vote on it. In addition to Blanc, the central board consists of SFV Secretary General Robert Breiter, Claudius Schäfer and Philipp Studhalter (Swiss Football League), Samuel Scheidegger and Marco Di Palma (1st Division) and Sandro Stroppa and Stephan Häuselmann (amateurs).

Blanc supports Yakin

If President Blanc has his way, the matter should already be decided. According to Blick-Infos, de Romand recently made it clear in official circles that Yakin would be part of the draw in Hamburg. A clear indication that Yakin will remain coach. The statement matches Blanc’s EM promise to Yakin.

Unlike Blanc, Tami, Yakin’s immediate superior, no longer supported the Nati coach – on the contrary. After the poor qualifying result in Romania (0-1), the Ticino resident spoke of a “negative development” and a “step back”. Sometimes he even doubted whether the European Championship qualification, which is financially very important for the SFV, would succeed at all. “Four wins, five draws and one defeat are not enough.”

After the defeat against Romania: “A question about Yakin must be asked”(01:49)

And then Tami also said the sentence with which, in the eyes of many observers, he actually dismissed the coach: “It is conceivable that we will go to the European Championship without Yakin.” If Tami were to lobby the central board for a coaching change but did not get his wish, he would have to think about his own future.

And Yakin? Behind the scenes, he and his coach fight passionately for a future with the national team. Soon he will have certainty.
