Djokovic and Sinner faced each other twice.

Grand Slam record winner Novak Djokovic’s losing streak with Serbia in the Davis Cup continues. The 36-year-old lost both his matches in the semi-finals in Malaga, Spain, with Serbia losing 2-1 to Italy. The country’s last title was 13 years ago.

The Southern Europeans led by Jannik Sinner will play their first Davis Cup final in a quarter of a century against Australia on Sunday. The only title won in the team competition came in 1976.

At the start, Miomir Kecmanovic won the match between the number two players against Lorenzo Musetti 6:7 (7:9), 6:2, 6:1 and put Serbia ahead. Djokovic then missed three match points against Sinner in a repeat of the final at the ATP Finals last Sunday, losing 2:6, 6:2, 5:7. In the decisive doubles match, Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego defeated Djokovic and Kecmanovic 6:3, 6:4.

Doping test refused?

Before the semi-final, a media report about a failed doping test by the Serbs before the quarter-final against Great Britain caused an uproar. As the Spanish “Marca” further reported, the team agreed to blood and urine samples after the match.

The 36-year-old Djokovic criticized the on-site methods following the incident and said he could not understand why the test was scheduled before his match as it would disrupt his preparation. He then complained about a “completely illogical” situation he had never encountered before. (AFP/mom)
