It was a message that surprised Swiss ski fans: Marco Odermatt (26) will be missing from Thursday’s downhill training in Copper Mountain (USA).
The skier explained the absence to Blick: it’s the back! But a day later: A collective sigh of relief among the Swiss ski team: Odermatt took a huge step in the right direction on Friday morning at the training camp in Copper Mountain after the back injury he sustained on Tuesday.
Thanks to the team
The two-time World Cup winner completed three test runs on the downhill. “It worked very well,” Odermatt summarizes. «The back recovered quickly and I did a lot for it. Since Wednesday I have been doing therapy three times a day with special exercises for the lower back. A special word of thanks goes to my physiotherapist and the Kondi trainer, who once again did a top job.”
One of the neutral training observers was former World Cup driver Patrick Bechter, who is now responsible for the ski boot service at the Head company. His conclusion: “It was clear that Marco proceeded with the necessary caution during this training. But I’m sure he’s excited for the downhill and super-G at Beaver Creek.” Before Odermatt travels to Beaver Creek, he wants to complete two super-G sessions at Copper Mountain.
