Sion flop Balotelli wants to go to the European Championship: ‘I see myself as the best striker in Italy’

Mario Balotelli wants to return to the Italian national team.

Mario Balotelli (33) is undoubtedly one of the most dazzling figures in Italian football of the past decade. His brace against Germany in the semi-finals of the 2012 European Championship will never be forgotten. But those days are far away today. Balotelli’s last time on the pitch for the Italian national team was in 2018, in a Nations League match against Poland. Since? Lots of scandals, lots of injuries, lots of questionable transfer decisions.

“Best striker in Italy”

After a forgettable year at FC Sion, Balotelli is now back in Turkey with Adana Demirspor. He is doing well there with three goals in five games, but his body is still bothering him. Yet Balotelli sees himself able to strengthen Squadra Azzura.

After the successful qualification of his compatriots for the European Championship, the star striker is positioning himself for a return to the national team. “When I’m fit, I still see myself as the best striker in Italy,” he assured broadcaster TvPlay. Especially in the offensive, he recognizes weaknesses in the team – which he would like to solve himself.

“Did Raspadori and Scamacca even play yesterday? How many shots did they have between them? Two?” he asks provocatively in the direction of the two strikers that coach Luciano Spalletti (64) has called up. “I want to get fit and play for the national team,” Balotelli makes clear.

Will Spalletti listen to his request? That is at least doubtful. Even if Balotelli adds: “I always hope for a team. I have met Spalletti several times in the past.” (sbe)
