Skip Silvana Tirinzoni (r.) and her team are still in strong form at the European Championships.

The Swiss curlers led by Skip Silvana Tirinzoni need just one win at the European Championships in Aberdeen to reach the semi-finals.

Four-time world champions Carole Howald, Selina Witschonke, Silvana Tirinzoni and Alina Pätz achieved their sixth victory in their sixth match on Tuesday with a 6-5 win against outsider Estonia led by skip Marie Kaldvee-Turmann. The close result belies the fact that the Swiss controlled the match at the end with flawless defensive play and did not give the Estonians a chance to equalize and force an extra end.

Two victories for the Swiss men

In the meantime, the men of CC Geneva have come off their meandering course. After a 7:5 victory against the Finns and an 8:4 against the Germans, Pablo Lachat, Sven Michel, Skip Yannick Schwaller and Benoît Schwarz recorded four victories and two defeats.

Two wins from the last three round-robin matches against the Czech Republic, co-favourites Sweden and Norway, should be enough to advance to the semi-finals.

As in the previous defeats against Italy and Scotland, the Swiss, number two at the 2022 European Championship, could not avoid a completely unsuccessful end against the Germans led by Sixten Totzek. In the 5th end they faced a four-man duel in which they trailed 2-4 after leading 2-0. This time, however, the Swiss recovered splendidly. They turned the tide with three semi-detached houses in a row. (SDA)
