Yule, who campaigned for the approval of the climate law last summer, also shows only limited understanding. “I thought it was a shame, because there were still a few drivers at the start. We understand your concerns. But I think it’s not part of the sport and it’s not the platform to express yourself on such topics.”
But he is insightful. “This topic is very present in skiing, because our sport is also suffering from the effects of climate change.” But this problem cannot be solved so quickly, says the Valais. “I didn’t become a World Cup rider overnight, it took years.”
Bad weather for cancellation of Zermatt
Yule holds the FIS responsible for a change in skiing. “A first step towards improving skiing would certainly be to keep travel to a minimum. It is up to the FIS to plan the race calendar better. We as drivers keep turning to the FIS to change things, but they don’t always listen.”
Yet he does not see climate change as a reason to cancel the races in Zermatt. «Skiing is an outdoor sport. I don’t think the cancellations in Sölden and Zermatt are related to climate change, but rather because the weather was so bad on those days. Such cancellations also happen in mid-February.” (mab)
