Two wins and one defeat – Carlos Alcaraz (20) and Novak Djokovic (36), currently the best tennis players in the world, did not get through the group stage smoothly during the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy.
With his 6:4, 6:4 victory over the Russian Daniil Medvedev (27, ATP 3), Alcaraz, second in the world rankings, still manages to finish first in Group Red and that is why he will now have a goal with Djokovic in the semi-finals on Saturday (second in the green group).
Alcaraz is happy
For the fourth time (fifth time in total), the Spaniard and the Serbian will face each other on the tennis court in 2023. World number one Djokovic won the semi-finals at the French Open and the final in Cincinnati. Alcaraz triumphed in the Wimbledon final. It was always a crime thriller or a drama – or both together.
Alcaraz: «Novak is currently the best player in the world. He has only lost six games this year, which is incredible. I will show my best tennis and enjoy it. I’m looking forward to Novak.”
Sinner meets Medvedev
Italian Jannik Sinner (22, ATP 4) and Medvedev will compete in Turin for the second semi-final. The last group match on Friday evening between the Russian Andrej Rublev (26, ATP 5) and the German Alexander Zverev (26, ATP 7) is fundamentally pointless from a sporting point of view, they were both eliminated early.
