Shortly after the final whistle, St. Gallen goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi takes center stage, sheds bitter tears, needs to be comforted and hugged by teammates. The 4-2 victory against Winterthur? The saved penalty? The jump to the top of the table? The seventh victory in the seventh home game? All just side notes.

Because Zigi’s thoughts are with the late Raphael Dwamena. “I have lost my best friend, I am very sad,” said the Ghanaian national goalkeeper after the match in the mixed zone. Under his goalkeeper jersey, Zigi wears a T-shirt with the inscription: “Rest in Peace, Raphael.”

On Saturday, 28-year-old Dwamena, also a former player for the Ghanaian national team but now under contract with the Albanian club KF Egnatia, collapsed during a match and lay motionless. The players from both teams provide first aid and a short time later Dwamena is transported to a nearby hospital. Shortly afterwards the news arrives that the ex-striker did not survive the incident.

The FCW is also mourning

And for Zigi, who has known Dwamena for half an eternity, a world collapses. “The two have known each other since they were young, they came to the Red Bull Academy together for trial training,” recalls FCSG coach Peter Zeidler, who was once Red Bull himself. It’s all incredible. “I still can’t believe it,” said the 61-year-old.

FC Winterthur also has to mourn a death. Before the match, it is revealed that Zauberfuss’s mother Matteo di Giusto died unexpectedly. The FCW kickers play with mourning ribbon, the fans condole with a banner: “Thinking of you, lots of Chraft Matteo.”

Only the second defeat in the seventh game against Zeidlers St. Gallen? The missed penalty? Schmid’s bad pass before the 1:1? All just side notes.
