On Friday evening there was the top match in the 2nd Bundesliga between St. Pauli and Hannover. The match ended goalless, but was overshadowed by riots in the away area.
The sad result: at least 17 police officers and 15 fans were injured. According to the police, an officer is in hospital with several broken bones and at least one football fan has also been admitted.
Although police have launched the investigation, it is unclear why the riots occurred. As “Bild” reports, a fan in the guest sector was “significantly attacked”. According to statements from Hannover fans, a St. Pauli supporter allegedly sneaked in to steal a flag. Meanwhile, police initially said it was a dispute between away fans.
270 police officers on duty
“Our colleagues went there to save this person,” a police spokesperson told “Bild”. And that ultimately led to the violent riots. The fans attacked the police with punches, kicks and flagpoles, pushing them back from the block. Their response? They used pepper spray and batons.
The game therefore had to be stopped for about five minutes before the ball started rolling again. A total of 270 police officers were present. This is because it was clear before kick-off that the relationship between the two teams’ fans was hostile. But its use is now causing criticism. While the police justify entering the sector to prevent something worse from happening, the fan support groups of both teams criticize the action as disproportionate. (beer)
