Just missed out on victory: Livio Wenger finished a strong third place at the start of the season.

The skating season starts this year in Ohibiro, Japan, and from a Swiss perspective it could hardly be launched better. Livio Wenger finished third in the mass start and missed victory by three-hundredths of a second.

The 30-year-old from Lucerne only has to admit defeat to winner Bart Hoolwerf (25, Netherlands) and his Belgian namesake Bart Swings (32, Olympic champion).

Wenger made the start of the season extremely successful after the preparation had become a rollercoaster ride. In July he broke his collarbone in a fall. The coming winter promises a lot, and for Wenger it is clear: “Gold, silver, bronze – that must be the goal now.” (ch)
