The tragic death of hockey professional Adam Johnson (†29) shocked the sports world. The American, who works for the English club Nottingham Panthers, fatally injured his neck in a duel with Matt Petgrave of the Sheffield Steelers at the end of October. In the aftermath of the horror accident, a debate also took place in this country about better protection for the exposed necks of hockey players.
On Wednesday, Johnson was paid his final respects at the ice rink in his hometown of Hibbing, Minnesota. Family members and supervisors gathered in the packed room to say goodbye together. His partner and fiancée Ryan Wolfe gave an emotional speech as he fought back tears. She concluded by saying, “I will never stop thinking about you, missing you, and loving you until we can be together again. I love you.” (sbe)
