Servette hit by injuries: Weiler: “16 players is more than enough”

Keigo Tsunemoto and David Douline are on Geneva’s long injury list in Servette ahead of the Europa League match against Sheriff Tiraspol (Thursday, 6.45pm in the Blick live ticker). Because the Grenats want to play in the Conference League in the spring – for that they need third place in the group – the match against the Moldovans is crucial.

On Wednesday there were only 16 field players present at the Geneva training ground. Including only three fit midfielders: Gaël Ondoua, Samba Diba Lele and Timothé Cognat. Reason for concern for coach René Weiler? Not really, at least not at first glance.

Big change for every game

“16 players are more than enough. “I can make five changes,” Weiler smiles, dismissing the injury problems. «We need ten field players from the start. So the math works out.” Says a coach who has changed regularly since the start of the season. He has not yet drawn up his starting eleven for Thursday.

«Everyone who trained today has my full confidence. I don’t work with a typical starting XI that doesn’t change. Several players have shown that they can play an important role for us,” Weiler explains. The thinning out of his midfield is obviously not a major concern for him.

Midfield as a problem area?

‘We have three players who can play in this position. And then we see who is available to us. We have flexible players, even though I won’t mention any names today,” Weiler says again with a smile. The attacking players Miroslav Stevanovic or Jérémy Guillemenot could take a more central position if necessary.

The fact that Miroslav Stevanovic and Chris Bedia are suspended for Sunday’s league match against Basel will also play a role in Weiler’s considerations. “The next match is always the most important, but it is true that I also have to think about Basel,” he admits. It seems certain that Stevanovic and Bedia will start against Sheriff Tiraspol.

Despite the decimated squad, Servette will go into the groundbreaking group match with confidence. There is a pretty bad draw from the first leg, but there are also five wins in the Super League.

Endurance runner Mazikou with tenth performance in a row

“We have only one goal: to win,” explains René Weiler. He can count on Bradley Mazikou at left back. Competitor Anthony Baron is still missing and that is why the Congolese full-back started the last nine games in all competitions. But he doesn’t seem to get tired of it.

“I speak to the coach regularly. For him it is important to know whether we feel we can continue or not,” says Mazikou about his deployment times. Will he feel fit enough to start his tenth game in a row on Thursday evening? The answer comes with a big smile: “Of course!”
