“Nothing to do with football anymore”: Man Utd coach ten Hag with angry speech after bankruptcy in Denmark

Manchester United lose 3-4 in Copenhagen – and coach Erik ten Hag is angry.

There’s a worm in the making at Manchester United. Disappointing results, discordant notes from the locker room, coach counted out. It is fitting that the “Red Devils” made a big mistake in the Champions League on Wednesday evening. Arriving in Copenhagen as big favorites, the shining footballers from the Premier League lost a crazy match against the Danes 3-4. Also because striker Marcus Rashford (26) was sent off the field in the first half after a serious foul.

After the match there was not only a lot of malice but also criticism of United. The “Mirror” speaks of a “disaster in Denmark”. Rightly so. It is not only the ninth defeat in the seventeenth competition match this season. The bankruptcy also means that the well-paid star team will drop to the bottom of Champions League Group A – behind Galatasaray and Scandinavian bogeyman Copenhagen.

Ten Hag was angry

It goes without saying that the pressure on trainer Erik ten Hag (53) is increasing. After the match he made it clear: from his point of view, the defeat was mainly due to questionable referee decisions. “Both goals conceded in the first half should never count,” he complained at the press conference. With the Danes’ first goal – scored by ex-FCB striker Mohamed Elyounoussi (45th) – he claims to have recognized an offside position. But not from the goalscorer. But from a teammate who would have blocked United goalkeeper Onana’s view.

And the second goal conceded in the first round, a hand penalty from Goncalves (45+9th), would have been just as irregular. “This is a very soft and embarrassing penalty decision,” says ten Hag. “The ball goes to the hand, but from very close and the hand is in a natural position.” A controversial whistle for sure. But this was compensated for in the second half with an almost identical hand penalty against Copenhagen.

“It has nothing to do with football anymore”

Ten Hag’s tirade does not end there. The Dutchman also assesses the red card against Rashford, who hits an opponent on the ankle with full force, differently. “When you see scenes like this repeated, they always look much worse.”

He was “very disappointed” with all these decisions by the referees. And adds: “I don’t think the game should ever be like this. This has nothing to do with football anymore.”

Ten Hag concluded his angry speech with an appeal to a wagon castle mentality. “So many decisions have been made against us all season, we have had so many setbacks or injuries. But at some point the tide turns in our favor.” (sbe)
