Marcel Hug (l.) and Catherine Debrunner win the New York Marathon.

Swiss wheelchair athlete Marcel Hug wins the New York Marathon for the third time in a row and for the sixth time in total, making him the new sole record winner.

The 37-year-old leaves no chance for the competition in the “Big Apple” and secures his sixth victory in the sixth major marathon of the year – something no one has ever achieved before Hug.

In 1:25:29, the Thurgauer missed the course record he had set the year before by just three seconds.

Swiss women’s double victory

However, there is a new course record for the women, with Switzerland celebrating a double victory. At her premiere in New York, Catherine Debrunner smashed the previous record of the American Susannah Scaroni of 1:39:32 by more than three minutes.

Behind the Thurgauer, Manuela Schär secured second place, more than eight minutes behind. (SDA)
