UEFA will organize the Ballon d’Or together with the French media group Groupe Amaury from 2024. The question is whether Lionel Messi, who received his eighth golden ball at the end of October, will make the final selection.

The Ballon d’Or has been awarded annually since 1956 by the trade magazine “France Football”, which is part of the Groupe Amaury.

Groupe Amaury remains the owner of the brand and will continue to monitor the voting process, which remains unchanged. “UEFA will contribute its football expertise, market the global commercial rights and host the annual gala event,” the association said.

Two new prizes will also be awarded. From 2024, not only the player of the year will be chosen, but also the coach of the year.

The Ballon d’Or is not synonymous with being chosen as a world footballer. This election is further organized by FIFA. Only from 2010 to 2015 was the world footballer awarded the ‘Golden Ball’ as part of a collaboration between FIFA and ‘France Football’. Since then, two awards have been presented for the best footballer of the year. (SDA/dti)
