The Swiss national ice hockey team is expected to compete against record Olympic champions Canada, Sweden and hosts Italy at the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan.
The group division for the preliminary round is based on the assumption that Russia and Belarus, which qualified in the qualifiers, will be admitted to the 2026 Winter Games.
If the two countries are excluded from the Olympic tournament due to the war of aggression against Ukraine, a redistribution must take place. A decision by the IIHF world association on the participation or exclusion of Russia and Belarus is expected to be made in the spring of 2024.
The group division for the preliminary round is based on the world rankings, in which Switzerland is in 7th place. The top 8 are qualified for the Olympic tournament. The remaining three places alongside hosts Italy will be determined in qualifying tournaments at the end of summer 2024. If Russia were to be excluded, Slovakia, ranked ninth in the world, would move up as regular starters. (SDA/dti)
