Urs Fischer already thought as a coach when he still played for FCZ. He conducted, orchestrated and acted. Even then, the coaches on the line always asked for his advice; he was their extended arm on the field. Urs Fischer is a born football coach.

And as such, he always showed it to everyone; with satisfaction to those who initially laughed at and underestimated him. When he successfully coached FC Zürich, it was claimed that he could only do so as “Züri-Bueb” at FCZ. What happened? He then went to FC Thun in the Bernese Oberland, led the quiet club to the Europa League twice and was named coach of the year in Switzerland.

Coronation Champions League

He was then poached by Basel. What happened? He became champion and cup winner twice. Successes that FCB can only dream of today. When he signed for Union Berlin in Germany’s second division, many people thought: what does he want there? What happened? He quickly led the Iron Men from the second division to the House of Lords, to number 1 in Berlin, to the top of the rankings and, to top it all off, into the Champions League.

Nowadays you can say: Urs Fischer is a Swiss export hit, a great trainer. And what happens now? He may be released soon. The eleven competitive defeats in a row are serious.

“Shoulder to shoulder”

But no, it shouldn’t be that way. The sustainable development of an average club into a top team not only requires success, but also comes through difficult phases. And who would seriously argue that Urs Fischer is not the right person for Union in this tense sporting situation? The two fit like a glove.

Especially Union, the club that prides itself so much on being different from the mainstream, that puts so much emphasis on cohesion and team spirit. «We from the East are always moving forward. Shoulder to shoulder for Iron Union. Times are tough and the team is tough. That’s why we win with the Eisern Union,” says punk icon Nina Hagen in the club song.

It would be unforgivable to take the path of least resistance and blame everything on the coach. Not after everything Fischer has achieved with this club.

Make your mark!

He would like to see those in charge now refuse the usual laws of football and support the coach, even in the event of possible relegation. SC Freiburg did the same with Christian Streich. And it drove wonderfully. That would be a strong sign, and anything else would be a betrayal of the club’s own philosophy.

No matter how it happens. Urs Fischer will go down in history at Union Berlin as a legend, as a coach who accomplished miracles. And for us Swiss, for whom he holds the flag high in the Bundesliga with his down-to-earth, authenticity and honest work, he is already a cult figure.
