December 2012: Joe Thornton participates in the Spengler Cup for HC Davos.

Joe Thornton (44) thrilled Swiss hockey fans, especially those in Davos, during the 2004/05 NHL lockout season. The striker achieved 79 points in 54 NLA games (including play-offs), won the championship title and the Spengler Cup with the HCD. The Canadian, who recently resigned, will return in about two months, but as a coach.

As TSN reporter Darren Dreger reports, he and Brad Pascall (52, assistant coach of the Calgary Flames) should coach Team Canada at the prestigious event for their 17th title. They must therefore “take care of the management tasks and the composition of the Canadian team”.

Thornton officially announced last Sunday that he is ending his career. He also made 33 appearances for Davos during the 2012/13 lockout season, followed by a further twelve NL games in 2020/21 while on loan at Landwassertal. In the NHL, the No. 1 draft pick made 1,714 appearances in 1997, ranking him sixth on the list of all-time greatest players. (ch)
