It is the largest fundraising evening in Switzerland. At the Laureus Charity Night 2023 with approximately 600 guests from sports, business and show business, the Laureus Foundation Switzerland will raise money for social sports programs. Between an exciting show and a cozy gala dinner, the foundation’s partners and ambassadors will auction their unique items and unique “Once-In-A-Lifetime” experiences at ten auctions during an evening. The foundation uses the proceeds to give children and young people in difficult living situations access to sports.
“I can’t imagine life without cycling. “Unfortunately, there are many children, including here in Switzerland, who do not have access to sports,” says chairman and former professional cyclist Fabian Cancellara (42) of the Laureus Foundation. “That is why I want to support the idea of the Laureus Foundation and contribute as an ambassador.” Countless other personalities from the sports world follow his example: for example, wrestler Christian Stucki (38), freeski world champion Andri Ragettli (25), former gymnast Giulia Steingruber (29) and triathlete Daniela Ryf (36). They will all be there at Charity Night 2023.
“Sport provides unforgettable, beautiful moments”
The Laureus Foundation Switzerland is one of eight national foundations worldwide that form the global Sport For Good Foundation. IWC Schaffhausen and Mercedes-Benz Switzerland launched the charity organization in this country in 2006. Since then, they have supported the foundation as global partners, including through their involvement in the Laureus Charity Night at the Zurich Convention Center. According to CEO Roland Schell, Mercedes-Benz Switzerland offers “unique models and experiences with the star” for the auctions. With company volunteer work, the car brand makes an important contribution to the sporting experience for children and young people in Switzerland outside the fundraising evening. Mercedes-Benz offers its employees a day’s work every year in one of the Laureus programs. “I am convinced that a company’s social involvement is only successful if its employees support it,” says Schell. He proudly adds: “The offer is well received, which is why we want to expand it further.”
Schell is involved with Laureus, is on the supervisory board and is also a former German judo champion. “That’s why I know that sport is a school of life. Sport can shape you for life and provide you with unforgettable moments. Laureus makes exactly this possible for children throughout Switzerland. Personally, I think that’s great.”
“We are completely convinced of it»
IWC Schaffhausen is auctioning two exclusive watches from IWC brand ambassador Eileen Gu (20) with special engraving at Charity Night 2023. These are engraved with the signature of the Olympic freestyle skiing champion. “We are fully convinced of Laureus’ approach,” emphasizes Franziska Gsell, CMO of IWC Schaffhausen. “Initiating and promoting social change is a central concern for IWC Schaffhausen.”
The head of marketing is also personally involved. Since 2021, Gsell has been working on a voluntary basis as a board member of the Laureus Foundation Switzerland. And that is why she knows: ‘Sport can have enormous power to break down prejudices and promote the development of underprivileged children and young people. That is why the social sports programs that Laureus financially supports worldwide have a lasting positive impact on our society. By the way, I personally believe in that too.”
From the skate project to the sports field
Other unique items and ‘Once-In-A-Lifetime’ experiences come from partners MSS Holding AG and Groupe Mutuel, as well as from the ambassadors. The proceeds from the Laureus Charity Night auctions flow to the various sports programs that the foundation supports. From the skate project “Gorilla Freestyle Tour” from dance workshops and street football to general sports offers for refugees or free places for sports camps during the school holidays. The Laureus Foundation Switzerland moves more than 23,000 children and young people throughout Switzerland every year with its seven social support programs – not least thanks to the major fundraising evening in Zurich.
