Luis Rubiales has been banned by FIFA for three years.

After the kissing scandal, FIFA banned former Spanish federation president Luis Rubiales (46) for three years. The decision of the disciplinary committee excludes Rubiales from any football activity at national and international level. The world association announced this on Monday.

According to FIFA, Rubiales violated Article 13 of the disciplinary regulations with his behavior during the awards ceremony for the World Cup final in August. The Spaniard had aggressively kissed national player Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth after the final victory against England in Sydney. The case caused a storm of outrage around the world.

FIFA initially provisionally suspended Rubiales for 90 days. Under great pressure, he only resigned his position as head of the Spanish association RFEF after some time. The world champions around Hermoso had now gone on strike. Spanish authorities are also investigating the case.

Rubiales can appeal the verdict

According to FIFA regulations, Rubiales now has ten days to request an explanation about the three-year ban. If the application is successful, it will be published afterwards. The decision can be appealed to the appeals committee.

In its statement, the world association ultimately reaffirmed “its unconditional commitment to respecting and protecting the integrity of all people and adhering to basic rules of decency.” (AFP/dti)
