You have to give it to Heiko Vogel (47). The man has confidence in himself. Even when he’s at his lowest point. Four games, four defeats, 0:10 goals. Devastating! And yet, after the 3-0 debacle in the basement match against Lausanne, the FCB coach still has one or two surprising answers up his sleeve.

When asked if he was at his wits’ end, the man from the Palatinate replied: “I haven’t even started Latin yet.” Asked whether the team needed new impetus on the sidelines, Vogel said: “It is my nature to always keep going. Giving up is not an option.”

His team, on the other hand, seems to have already given up. There is no other explanation for the miserable performance in the first half. Vogel calls the performance ‘underground’. The FCB is completely restless and sees no way out against the brutal newcomer. Vogel sees the reasons mainly in the fact that the players do not adhere to the tactical guidelines. “And I won’t tolerate that.” He became noisy in the cabin. And tomorrow, Monday, it will be loud too. What exactly he will discuss remains internal.

Can Vogel still make the players work?

The question is whether Vogel will even get the chance to compete against his team tomorrow. The Bebbi have presented themselves as too inferior in recent weeks, the downward trend for the man who said in the spring that he no longer wanted to be a coach is too intense. And now it’s like that again.

‘We must learn to suffer. There is not enough fire on the field,” says Vogel after the match. He himself sets a bad example for over ninety minutes and behaves on the sidelines like a torch that has already burned out.

While he danced around gesturing wildly and messing with everything and everyone last season, Vogel became tame in the fall of 2023. When referee San checked the first Lausanne penalty on the screen, Vogel stoically accepted the decision. Both hands in his pockets. When ex-FCB striker Kaly Sène took the lead, he sat on the bench. And hides for a long time.

Basel also loses the basement match against Lausanne-Sport.

Vogel said afterwards that in his opinion his FCB should have been awarded a penalty. And that you have to work hard for everything. Last season he would probably have questioned the entire Swiss refereeing system.

Only when he criticizes Lausanne’s time game does old Heiko Vogel express himself a bit: “Lausanne has cleverly managed to take the time off the clock. I don’t want to accuse anyone of anything, but that also played tricks on us.”

Will Vogel be sent to the desert?

The question is: how can you get your teeth pulled when Basel’s attack is so toothless? And at the back, the team looks like a bunch of scared chickens afraid of the pot. “Almost every standard situation causes panic. Even the kick-off,” says Vogel.

Will the FCB bosses around president David Degen also panic and send Heiko Vogel into the desert soon? “We have seen that it works for him. Last season and also ten years ago,” says captain Fabian Frei.
