In recent years, the Rettenbach Glacier has developed into the feel-good room of Gino Caviezel (31). In 2020, Sölden from Bünden managed to reach the World Cup podium for the first time with third place, and in 2021 he narrowly missed the “Stockerl” in fourth place.
And this time too there is a lot to be said for a top result. «Gino delivered extremely strong performances in the giant slalom and super-G during the preparation. And although he was usually very fast, he was eliminated a maximum of three times during training,” praises giant slalom head coach Helmut Krug.
Caviezel did not start construction with a particularly good feeling: his brother Mauro (35) resigned. «I knew that I would have to complete the strength and endurance training without Mauro for the first time. And I don’t like it at all when I’m alone in these units.
Odermatt as a training colleague – even virtually
Gino all alone for the first time in his career? No. He rarely had to sweat alone: “I trained with Marco Odermatt in Nidwalden for a few weeks, then Odi came to my training room in Landquart for a few weeks. And when we lifted weights separately, we would push each other between exercises via FaceTime.”
Caviezel and Odermatt have been very good friends for years and have often vacationed together. However, the Graubünden resident says that his friend’s gigantic series of successes sometimes also has a negative influence on him: “What Odi is doing is sensational, I take my hat off to him. But last winter there were races where my good performance was hardly appreciated by Marco’s victory.”
Caviezel gives an example: “Fourth place in the Super-G in Beaver Creek was also a great success for me because it happened in the first race after Mauro’s nasty fall. But because Odi won in a big way, no TV channel asked me for an interview. In Switzerland it is often forgotten that winning the Nations Cup requires not only Odi, but consistently good results from the entire team.
The special Caviezel story about David Beckham
The Netflix documentary about David Beckham has done Caviezel very well lately. “In general, I like watching sports documentaries. The Beckham series in particular impressed me because he always got back up despite being hit hard. His story also motivates me.”
Especially because Gino’s twin sister Gianina had a special meeting with the English football hero last winter: “At the World Cup in Courchevel, she suddenly noticed that Beckham was sitting next to her in the armchair. Gianina did not dare to talk to him. But suddenly David started talking to her .He was really nice and funny.”
