It was a blow in the first race: the first female driver was disqualified in Sölden due to a wax violation.

The new ski season is not even a whole race old and the first bang is already a fact: between the two gigantic women’s races on Saturday, news is circulating on the glacier that a prominent female skier will be disqualified.

It soon becomes clear: the affected athlete is the Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel (31). She is said to have violated the ban on fluorinated waxes recently imposed by the FIS. And the rules have no mercy. Mowinckel is disqualified and, after her good first run (6th place), is no longer allowed to participate in the second round.

Gut-Behrami already had fears

Even before the start of the World Cup season, drivers were concerned about the rule changes. Swiss ski topper Lara Gut-Behrami (32) also expressed her dissatisfaction this week in an interview with Blick. “There is a lot of uncertainty for us. The pressure on service people is increasing. Because if I ski a good descent, but only lose half a second, what should the service guy say? I didn’t screw up, but maybe others did?”

With the Mowinckel case, it is unlikely that discussions about the FIS’s new wax regime will diminish.

While her competitors battle for victory in the second run, the excluded Mowinckel explains herself to Norwegian broadcaster TV2. Through tears, she says, “I’m sure there was a mistake here. Those responsible came to me and said they had no choice.” And Mowinckel adds: “The measured fluorine values were apparently so high that there could not simply be slight contamination of the ski.”

The Norwegian team now suspects that old material was used to treat Mowinckel’s skis, causing the fluorine value to be too high. (cat)
