Nairo Quintana returns to racing in familiar surroundings. The Colombian, who was subsequently excluded from the Tour de France last year due to a “medical violation”, will ride for the Movistar team again next season.
Quintana, 33, was found to have used tramadol twice during the last Tour de France, which resulted in his subsequent disqualification. The South American took 6th place in the final rankings.
Won the Giro and the Vuelta with Movistar
The use of the painkiller was not considered ‘doping’, but rather a ‘medical crime’. Tramadol is on the International Cycling Federation’s (UCI) list of banned substances, but the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) will only change this classification next season.
Quintana left his former employer Arkéa-Samsic a few weeks after the ruling. He was already under contract with Equipe Movistar from 2012 to 2019. During this time he won the Giro d’Italia (2014) and the Vuelta (2016). (SDA)
