When FCB announced the establishment of a new sports committee this week, it was finally clear: team leader Heiko Vogel (47) is history. Almost a year ago, when he took office, the German said that he only wanted to continue in professional football as a sports director. And last summer, after six months as interim coach, he reiterated: “A return to the coaching bench is not an option.”

Vogel is now a trainer again. Exactly that, and as he says, of his own free will. When asked whether he would have preferred to remain sports director, he says: “That was decided by consensus. I am not a coach under outside influence.”

Vogel does not want to see the fact that he and head scout Patrick Dippel, whom he installed in the spring, are not an integral part of the new sports committee as a loss of confidence: “The idea behind this is that the committee must keep its distance from the day-to-day operations of business. I think that makes sense. In addition, we are certainly heard in the group.”

There has not been enough time to adapt his contract as sports director to that of a coach. “There are more important things to do right now.” In other words: to finally lead FCB to victory again. The last three-pointer in the competition, a 5-2 against Winterthur, dates from July 30 (!). Since Vogel took over the coaching bench from Timo Schultz, not only have there been no points, but also no FCB goals.

Logically, the question arises about his job security. Vogel answers: “I know the mechanisms. But the club management’s confidence in my work is not only expressed, I feel it one hundred percent. Compliments for that!”

You shouldn’t read too much about expressions of confidence in football. If the FCB decline continues on Sunday against newly promoted Lausanne-Sport, the next coaching change in the Joggeli is getting closer.
