The spectators could no longer remain in their seats when Dominic Stricker (21) used his first match point against Casper Ruud (24, ATP 8) to advance to the quarter-finals of the Swiss Indoors. Also there: ex-FCB star Benjamin Huggel (46).
“I didn’t expect it,” the former national player and current TV pundit told Blick as he wanted to go home. The Norwegian, ranked 88 places higher and actually the big favorite, had to admit defeat in three sets in their first meeting.
“Streller and Stocker were very good”
It was the first time that Huggel saw the Swiss shooting star live. However, the Basel resident has already been to the Swiss Indoors several times. “You can’t count it on two hands,” he says, laughing. And talks about a special moment: “I was even there when Roger Federer played here for the first time in 1998.”
And what about the ex-footballer’s tennis skills? “I’m not on the field as often as I used to be,” the former midfielder admits. During his playing days he always measured himself against teammates – and cut his teeth on two teammates in particular: “Marco Streller and Valentin Stocker were very good. I was on equal footing with Alex Frei.”
