Suddenly with negative points on the table?: Everton is threatened with devastating sanctions from the Premier League

Everton FC is threatened with a significant points deduction.

No league has as many millions as the English Premier League – the best and most expensive league in the world. To ensure that the surplus has some degree of sustainability, there are also rules in England about how much money can be invested over which period. Everton are alleged to have broken these rules, which could result in a devastating points deduction for the Merseyside club.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the Premier League has recommended deducting twelve points from the current sixteenth place in the table. If this actually happens, Everton would be bottom of the table with a minus of five points!

More than 400 million losses in three years

An independent committee appointed by the Premier League in March will decide whether this will happen. The proceedings and associated hearings have been underway since last week. The exact details are not known, but it is suspected in the English media that it could be a tax crime when taking out a loan for the construction of the new stadium, which costs around 540 million. The Everton Stadium will replace the venerable Goodison Park from the summer of 2024.

Everton’s Financial Fair Play problems are not new. For years the club had spent more on players than it earned. The League’s financial regulations allow teams to make a loss of 105 million pounds (about R114 million) over a three-year period. Everton is said to have reported a loss of 371 million pounds (about 403 million francs) between 2019 and 2022.

The ruling is expected later this year

Given these figures, it seems almost absurd that the club has issued a statement denying that it has broken any rules. The league was always provided with the necessary information transparently and with a good conscience. As long as the exact content of the research is not known, the outsider remains in the dark.

What is clear: if the committee finds Everton guilty, in addition to the league’s advice for points deductions, a transfer embargo and a hefty fine are also conceivable. It would probably be easier for Everton not to be able to sign players or spend any more money than to suddenly find themselves bottom of the Premier League in October with minus 5 points. A ruling is expected later this year. (dti)
