Red Bull’s entry celebrated with the Hoppers: FCZ remains silent about Moniz’s illustrious ranking history

The new FCZ sports director Milos Malenovic (38) does not hesitate for long. In order to modernize the club’s structures, especially in the transition of young talent to professionals, he has already hired a host of new staff.

This week, the arrival of FC Wil assistant coach Gianluca Frontino (33) will be official from January 1; the ex-pro will act as a link between the Super League team and the U21.

Ricardo Moniz (59), who was hired last week, also works in the same region. The Dutchman is the new head of player development, previously worked as the Bulls’ global youth director and won the double as coach of Salzburg in 2012.

FCZ does not mention championship titles with rankings

But it’s not just Moniz’s history with the Bulls that is dazzling, it’s also his history with the rankings. The new FCZ man worked for city rivals in Zurich twenty years ago and was part of the Hoppers’ last two championship titles in 2001 and 2003. Title with GC? The FCZ deliberately kept this quiet during the presentation of the new man.

It was his Dutch partner Piet Hamberg (69), who was head of training at GC, and brought in Moniz in 2001 as head of the oldest junior cohort. When Marcel Koller (62) became classification coach in January 2003, Moniz came even closer to the pros. He became a technical trainer because Koller introduced individual training. And worked with players who read like a ‘Who’s Who’ from the last great era of record champions: Richard Nunez, Stéphane Chapuisat, Ricardo Cabanas, Vero Salatic, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Mladen Petric, Boris Smiljanic, Marc Hodel, Christoph Spycher, Andres Gerber , Eldin Jakupovic, Reto Ziegler, Pascal Castillo – and so on.

Smiljanic and Petric have fond memories of Moniz

Call Smiljanic. He remembers Moniz fondly. “Player development is exactly his thing, the FCZ can be happy with that. We benefited greatly from him and his Dutch school at the time. He was also an asset outside of football. Ricardo is a very positive guy, always up for a joke. And technically absolutely top,” the ex-Nati defender tells Blick. Petric, on the other hand, once dedicated an excellent bicycle kick for HSV to his former technical coach of the classification; Moniz had worked with him on the perfect execution of the spectacular shot.

And Moniz also had a certain young striker named Milos Malenovic under his wing in the rankings. Now the two are working together again. Now simply in the “Home of FCZ” instead of in the Hardturm.
