Cautiously everything is clear for American gymnastics icon Mary Lou Retton (55): The Olympic champion and five-time medalist from LA 1984 has left the hospital after pneumonia. Retton’s daughter McKenna Kelley (26) made this known on Instagram.

“Mom is home and in recovery mode,” Kelley wrote: “We still have a long road to recovery ahead of us, but it’s baby steps.”

Sufferers of a rare pneumonia

Two weeks ago it was announced that 55-year-old Retton had been transferred to intensive care with a rare form of pneumonia and was fighting to survive. Daughter Kelley then launched a crowdfunding appeal to cover medical costs. According to Kelley, Mary Lou Retton does not have health insurance.

Retton was one of the big stars of the Los Angeles Olympics. “America’s Sweetheart” was the first American woman to win the gold medal in the all-around competition, and she also earned silver in vault and team, as well as bronze in floor exercise and uneven bars. (AFP/men)
