Olympiacos fans turn their corner into a wall of fire in the derby.

Leader Olympiacos Piraeus welcomes rivals Panathinaikos Athens on Sunday evening for the top match of the Greek competition. A heated duel that ends prematurely and, above all, unpleasantly.

The memorable scene occurs when the score is 1:1. In the 50th minute a firecracker flies from the spectator stand onto the lawn. And meet Panathinaikos player Juankar (33), who is just warming up. He falls to the ground and covers his ears. The referee stops play while the player is being treated. Juankar then appears dazed, complains of hearing problems and has to be taken off the field on a stretcher.

The match was stopped for almost two hours before the referee decided to stop. While Piraeus, from whose fanblock the fireworks came, has not yet commented on the incident, Panathinaikos wrote on social media: “The referee has completed the game protocol and the fate of the match will be decided in court…”

There are always fireworks and pyrotechnic attacks

The latest incident once again shocked European club football. Several similar events have occurred in the past few weeks alone. On September 24, the Dutch classic between Ajax Amsterdam and Feyenoord Rotterdam was canceled after 55 minutes because burning pyros were thrown onto the field several times. Six days later, Gladbach Ultras caused a short interruption in the Bundesliga match against Bochum with the same action.

On October 8, Clermont goalkeeper Mory Diaw (30) was pelted with a lit firework during injury time by Montpellier fans in France. The petard explodes right next to the former Lausanne goalkeeper. This match has also been cancelled. The same applies to a match in the French women’s league the following weekend. There, Nati star Ramona Bachmann (32) was playing with Paris Saint-Germain against Reims when fireworks rained on the lawn shortly after the start of the second half. These are all scenes that do not belong in football. (beer)
