In what was probably Mercedes’ most competitive performance this season, Lewis Hamilton came within 2.25 seconds of eventual winner Max Verstappen (50th GP victory). Now the Briton is being robbed of his podium place – the FIA will decide at 2.20am Swiss time after a follow-up technical inspection found the underside of Hamilton’s W14 was not up to standards.
The accompanying message states: “The floor panels do not comply with Article 3.5.9 of the FIA Technical Regulations.” The said article 3.5.9 defines the nature of the floor slabs and their dimensions.
«The bottom plate should be uniformly 10 millimeters thick (plus/minus 0.2 millimeters), if the bottom plate is new. Due to wear and tear, a thickness of nine millimeters is accepted.”
Leclerc was also disqualified
Because the Mercedes did not reach this point, Hamilton’s result now lapses. And: Charles Leclerc also falls victim to this problem. The Monegasque is deprived of sixth place.
The step back also has serious consequences for Alfa-Sauber. Because: The opponents in the World Cup standings receive extra points due to the disqualification. A total of three for Alpha-Tauri (eighth place and fastest lap), four for Williams (ninth Albon, 10th Sargeant). The detailed GP analysis can be found here.
