The Mazraoui case at FC Bayern Munich enters the next round. The chairman of the Jewish gymnastics and sports association Makkabi Germany, Alon Meyer (49), criticizes the Munich team in their handling of the pro-Palestinian post of Bayern professional Noussair Mazraoui (25) in the ZDF sports studio. It is “absolutely impossible and unacceptable” that the post has no consequences for the player.
The Moroccan had, among other things, distributed a video on social media in which he wished the Palestinians a victory in the conflict with Israel. After many politicians called on Bayern Munich to remove Mazraoui from the squad, the Bundesliga club said in a statement that there would be no sanctions against the player. The defender “credibly assured the club management that, as a peace-loving person, he firmly rejects terror and war.”
Mazraoui “repented”
Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel (50) commented on the decision in an interview. Each case must be considered individually; one should not condemn across the board. A detailed and illuminating conversation took place with Mazraoui. “Noussair definitely showed real remorse,” Tuchel said.
Alon Meyer, on the other hand, sees the post as absolutely problematic: “If you take a one-sided position and wish the Palestinians victory – victory on what? – this is absolute anti-Semitism. It is an attack on our values.” When a top athlete with enormous reach posts something like this, it counteracts the work that is done every day. “We build bridges, we want to break through prejudices. They are being trampled here with a post,” says the president of Maccabi in the ZDF broadcast.
Not a word of sympathy or apology
Mazraoui himself spoke to ‘Bild’ and emphasized that he is committed to peace and justice in the world. He will “always be against all forms of terrorism, hatred and violence.” For Alon Meyer, Mazraoui’s explanation is inadequate. The player makes no mention of the massacre, the attack on Israel by Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, on October 7. Not a word of sympathy was uttered, nor a word of apology.
Meyer describes it as sad that the Bayern management is unable to set an example. “FC Bayern can do so much good, but with messages like this that are liked and posted millions of times, the damage to FC Bayern, to the Bundesliga and to our society is enormous,” said the 49-year-old.
The counterexample is Mainz 05, which suspended professional Anwar El Ghazi (28) after he downplayed the Hamas terrorist attack in a social media post. “I take my hat off to Mainz. “They are at the bottom of the table, but still have the moral courage to set an example,” said Meyer, praising Bayern’s Bundesliga rivals.
