An FCZ Ultra was convicted by a court in Basel.

The issue of fan violence continues to worry the Swiss football world. On Friday, a 26-year-old FCZ Ultra was sentenced to prison. The previously convicted martial artist must serve 30 months behind bars, of which 18 months are conditional, reports the “Basler Zeitung”.

The man was guilty of serious bodily harm against an opposing fan on May 1, 2022, when FC Zürich won the championship title in Basel. Before the match, a group of hooligans from Basel deliberately provoked a massive brawl with Zurich’s away fans. The convict was particularly ruthless and kicked a prostrate FCB Ultra four times in the head.

Court accepts no excuse

The suspect stated at the hearing that he did not intend to seriously injure anyone. As a martial artist, he can also dose his kicks and thus prevent injuries to his opponent. In any case, he only intervened in the fight to protect the families of the FCZ fans traveling with him, he claimed.

But the court did not accept that. Not only René Ernst (SP), chairman of the three chambers, described the protection argument as “completely unbelievable”. He was particularly critical of the 26-year-old’s brutal actions, which ultimately determined the sentence. “The FCB hooligan lay motionless on the ground and you kicked him. They pulled their leg back and pulled it through,” Ernst said.

The prison sentence should be a lesson for the FCZ-Ultra, Ernst said. However, the verdict is not yet final. (sbe)
