Fuss about the Matterhorn descent!

On Monday, reports in the French media sent ski fans into an uproar. At this point the organizers dumped snow on the glacier to get the slope ready for racing.

According to the reports, there was an accusation that excavators were destroying the Theodul Glacier in Zermatt for the World Cup ski races and digging into the ice. It was also said that organizers would build the ski slope outside the permitted perimeter.

Outrage about the committee’s decision

A decision by the Cantonal Building Committee (KBK) of Valais, which was made public on Thursday, now adds fuel to the fire. It states that all work outside the planned ski slopes must be stopped immediately. This means: if parts of the ski slope are actually not in the originally planned area, they are no longer allowed to be built – and the upcoming World Cup races could not take place in mid-November.

The Zermatt organizing committee responded immediately to the increasingly loud accusations and the building committee’s decision on Thursday. “We are pleased with the decision to stop work outside the approved ski area.” It further states: “We remain convinced that no work has been carried out outside the ski sports area.”

Don’t race in danger

The building committee said in its decision that they would soon take a photo on site to check the situation. Those responsible for Zermatt are not afraid that parts of the track are outside the homologated area.

«The races on the Matterhorn are in no way in danger. Preparation has been completed on the Swiss side in the ski sports zone and is ready to race. The planned training sessions will start as planned from next Sunday,” the press release said.

This means that the departures of 11/12 will be postponed. November (men) and 18/19. November (women) will take place as planned according to current evidence. (par/mwp)
