Nine days before the gigantic start in Sölden, there are many indications that Marco Odermatt can build on his gigantic performances from the last World Cup winter with 2024 points (13 wins this season, record points). “The preparation for the season went very well, we found optimal conditions on the glacier in Zermatt and in the training camp in Argentina,” says Odermatt’s coach Helmut Krug enthusiastically.
Compared to other Alpine stars, the man from Nidwalden did not start snow training in July, but in early August. Krug’s explanation: “Due to the enormous amount of competition Odi has to complete next winter, we have almost placed more emphasis on strength and fitness than on skiing in this preparation.”
The pain of choosing a helmet
But there is one uncertainty before the first race on the glacier in Sölden: Which helmet will the two-time overall World Cup winner, world champion and Olympic champion wear at the start? After those responsible at FIS informed Odermatt in a letter in the summer that the previous design would no longer be accepted by his sponsor Red Bull, the 26-year-old had his headgear painted with two new designs.
After President Johan Eliasch withdrew during the FIS autumn meeting in Zurich, Odermatt will now probably step on the gas again with his cult helmet. The superstar is still leaning towards a new helmet. Odermatt to Blick: “I was told that Eliasch had said that the treatment of the helmet designs in the coming winter would now remain the same as in previous years. Since I have not yet received this decision in writing, I will probably start working in Sölden with a freshly designed helmet.”
