After a day off on Monday, the HCD trains on Tuesday. But then an ordinary workout turns into an unforgettable one. Meanwhile, coach Josh Holden (45) is urgently called on the phone. Then he heard about the serious traffic accident at the Salezentobel Gallery, that the tunnel at the entrance to Davos was closed – and that Noah Schneeberger (35) was the passenger.
The players will then be informed. “We were all shocked when we found out Noah was involved,” says Andres Ambühl (40). “That took a lot out of us and pulled the rug out from under us.” However, the team remains uncertain about the exact health status of their teammate for 24 hours and is concerned.
The police report states that “a 69-year-old was driving on the main road from Klosters towards Davos. In the Salezentobel gallery, the car collided head-on and sideways with a semi-trailer driven by a 56-year-old man coming from the opposite direction. The driver was seriously injured and had to be freed from the car by the Davos fire brigade using breaking tools. His passenger was slightly injured. They were each flown by helicopter to the Graubünden cantonal hospital in Chur.”
The team is there for Schneeberger
The team will receive a first update from the hospital on Wednesday morning. In any case, the uncertainty has disappeared. “We hope he can now recover well,” said Captain Ambühl. Coach Holden still struggles with words the next day. “It is not easy to describe how affected the team is. We are like a family. And it is human nature to take care of each other.”
The Canadian-Swiss has only known the experienced defender since this season, but Schneeberger’s personality has left a strong impression on the new coach. “We’ve had long, good conversations since I’ve been here.”
They wrote to Schneeberger and “sent him words of encouragement,” Holden continued. Let him know that the team, the HCD, is ready for him. “Life has unfortunately reminded us how strong a team can stay together.”
And Ambühl adds: “In these kinds of situations you notice that people in a team care about each other and like each other.” The HCD captain assures that they will all be there and support Schneeberger, who has been sidelined since the end of September due to a knee injury, on his challenging road to recovery.
