A gambling scandal turns Italian football upside down. Now Juventus player Nicolo Fagioli has been suspended for seven months. The relatively minor ban, which came after an agreement with the sports court’s prosecutors, totals 12 months, but the 22-year-old midfielder can serve five with a number of other commitments. This includes Fagioli undergoing six months of therapy for his gambling addiction. There is also a fine of 12,500 euros.
Fagioli, who once played for Squadra Azzurra, is considered the central figure in the scandal. The young Juve star is said to have gambled over a million euros on illegal sports betting on online platforms. In recent days he had already cooperated with the researchers – with the aim of preventing a years-long ban. He has achieved that with the current agreement. The verdict against Fagioli came on Tuesday, a few hours before the European Championship qualifier in England.
There are more players involved
Two other young stars of the national team are also involved in the scandal, but they had to leave the team: Sandro Tonali (23) and Nicolo Zaniolo (24), both of whom are under contract in the English Premier League. Tonali only moved from AC Milan to Newcastle United in the summer, Zaniolo plays at Aston Villa. According to a report in the daily La Repubblica, Tonali is seeking a similar agreement with researchers.
Gambling is generally allowed in Italy, but not on illegal online platforms. Players are also not allowed to bet on sports in which they are active. Former celebrity photographer Francesco Corona, who made the affair public, has announced he will provide more names of the footballers involved. (SDA)
