After a perfect start with two wins in two games, the newly formed national U21 team conceded points for the first time. In Armenia, the young Swiss cannot get further than a 0-0 draw.
The Swiss had a difficult time from the start against the outsiders, who mainly focused on a compact defense, but repeatedly caused problems. Winti goalkeeper Marvin Keller, who is preferred to Pascal Loretz, has to intervene several times to avoid falling behind.
After an unfocused initial phase in which the Armenians had two good opportunities to score, the Swiss took control. Ultimately, however, they lack precision in the persons of Fabian Rieder and Lars Villiger.
Twice to the housing instead of to the network
Shortly before half time, Valmir Matoshi and Aurèle Amenda were too precise. The man from Thun hits the inside post with his powerful shot from 18 meters, the man from Bern hits the crossbar with his head after a corner in extra time.
Even in the second half, the Swiss rarely managed to put themselves in the spotlight offensively. Franck Surdez, Fabian Rieder and substitute Nikolas Muci had the best chances.
While Switzerland had to concede points and therefore took the lead in the competition for the first time in the third match against Albania, it was Armenia’s first points win in the fourth qualifying match. (SDA)
