ABN Amro Open in the anniversary year with wheelchair tennis players for the first time
The ABN AMRO Open, the largest tennis tournament in the Netherlands, will also host a tournament for wheelchair tennis players from next year. Until this year there was only one tournament for male wheelchair users in Rotterdam.
“We have so many strong women in the Netherlands. Diede de Groot is even number 1 in the world rankings. It’s great that we can give her a stage in her own country,” said tournament director Esther Vergeer, who herself won seven gold medals at the Paralympic Games. .
“The ABN AMRO Open is once again leading the way in offering equal opportunities for men and women. Hopefully others will follow suit.”
With the exception of the four Grand Slam tournaments, only the Eastborne (England) tournament is played by both male and female wheelchair tennis players in the same week as the able-bodied tennis players.

25-year-old De Groot has already won sixteen Grand Slams in singles. She has won the title in the last nine majors. Aniek van Koot (third) and Jiske Griffioen (sixth) are also in the top ten in the world rankings.

The ABN AMRO Open, formerly the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, added the wheelchair tournament fifteen years ago. The last three editions have been won by Britain’s Alfie Hewett.
The ABN AMRO Open will take place from February 13th to 19th, 2023. The tournament in Ahoy celebrates its 50th anniversary.
