Martin Frk (30) was brought to SCB to score goals. But suddenly the sniper was just sitting in the stands as a surplus foreigner. Five games in a row before he was allowed to play again for the first time on Saturday against Servette (2:3 nP).
The Czech did not make a bad impression at the start, harmonized well with Dominik Kahun and Tristan Scherwey and recorded two goals and three assists in the first five games.
When the striker appeared in front of the media after his comeback, he repeated one sentence over and over: “It’s a difficult situation.” You can tell his time in the stands has taken its toll. “It was nice to play again. You want to play and not sit out,” he says, explaining his dilemma at SCB: “We have eight foreigners. There are always two guys not in the lineup.”
Coach Jussi Tapola had explained to Frk why he was the one who had to sit in the stands. The winger, who comes from the AHL and is not one of the best runners, does not want to comment on that.
Understanding that Tapola did not change the winning team
Was Frk surprised that he was redundant? “Yes, I didn’t come here to sit in the stands. But the boys won initially and we played quite well. Why should the coach have changed the line-up again?”
He came to Bern night after night to play. “But it can happen that you have too many foreigners. It’s not fun sitting outside. I hope there is a solution. If Jussi Tapola wants to play with the best line-up and I am not part of it, I have to accept that.”
Frk was once given the opportunity to advertise on his own behalf against Servette. But he cut over the bouncing puck in front of the open goal. After all, he opened the score and made it 1-2.
When asked whether he can imagine being redundant again and having to wait, the Czech says: “We are currently taking things day by day. It was good that we got a point against Servette, but annoying that we lost. That’s why I don’t know what will happen in the next match on Wednesday.”
One less competitor for Frk is the Canadian Colton Sceviour, who was injured again on Friday in Lugano and will be out for two to four weeks.
