The ice rink competitions at the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo (I) will take place abroad. No new railway line is being built in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
The decision had recently been announced. After much back and forth, the disused bobsleigh track was demolished to make way for the planned new construction. But now the new project is permanently stopped due to financial and time pressure.
Now Giovanni Malago, the president of the organizing committee of the games, which will take place in just over two years, has confirmed the relocation of the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton races during the International Olympic Committee session in Mumbai (India).
Those responsible in Italy are creating a novelty in the history of the Winter Olympics. Competitions at such an event have never taken place outside the host country.
Is St. Moritz coming to kiss hands?
St. Moritz GR is being discussed as a possible location for the ice rink competitions. The operators, Swiss Olympic and Swiss Sliding, indicated to the Italians months ago that Switzerland would reach out for a takeover if the worst were to occur.
The Austrians have also shown interest with their train in Innsbruck. “We are working to explore all possible solutions and alternatives together with the IOC and international associations,” Malago said.
The reason for the move is the decision that plans for the reconstruction of the demolished railway line in Cortina d’Ampezzo have been abandoned after no company had registered for the tender. There is also increasing opposition due to the financial and environmental consequences. (SDA/md)
