Motorcycle star Marc Marquez (l.) can still only see it from the outside: But from 2024, the Spaniard will also ride one of the powerful private Ducati, such as the one that the new World Cup leader Jorge Martin (f.) has been with order.

The MotoGP Indonesia sprint race could not better illustrate why motorcycle superstar Marc Marquez (30) made his sensational switch from Honda to private team official of Gresini-Ducati this week from 2024.

Because Marquez is once again having a hard time on his slow factory Honda and falls into the gravel early on. While the ultimate commercial for private Ducati racing teams takes place at the front of the Saturday sprint.

The entire podium is occupied by non-factory riders, but they are all riding one of the powerful Ducati machines. 1st place: Jorge Martin (25) of Pramac-Ducati. 2nd place: Valentino Rossi’s half-brother Luca Marini (26) from Rossi’s VR46 Ducati team. 3rd place: Marini’s teammate Marco Bezzecchi (24).

Jorge Martin causes a stir at the top of the World Cup

Why Marquez would soon like to give up his status as a Honda factory rider and prefer to ride for Gresini-Ducati can also be seen in the World Championship table. Jorge Martin takes the overall lead in the World Championship as defending champion and Ducati factory rider Francesco Bagnaia (26) only finishes eighth.

Martin is the man of the hour in MotoGP. The new World Championship leader is on the verge of becoming the first non-factory rider in MotoGP history to become world champion. «It was not easy to start from 6th place and win on this track. It is a dream to now lead the World Cup. But I want to keep riding like I did before, when I wasn’t at the top,” says the newcomer from Madrid.

Martin is now seven points ahead. Ducati also won the constructors’ world championship early on with the Indonesia Sprint. It is logical that eight-time motorcycle champion Marquez expects similar results to Martin, Marini and Co. from 2024. on a Ducati.

Dettwiler has to start from the back

Noah Dettwiler (18) is at a very different point in his career than the established MotoGP stars. The Swiss talent replaces injured regular rider David Salvador (20, Sp) in his future Moto3 World Championship team CIP-KTM in Indonesia.

For the Solothurn resident, his first race of his career outside Europe is all about learning. The route and the team are new. Despite the wildcard use in Spielberg in August, everything surrounding the World Cup still takes some getting used to.

On Saturday, Dettwiler achieved a remarkable success in the third training session when he defeated his teammate Lorenzo Fellon (19, Fr). But in qualifying the Swiss newcomer falls completely back and starts on Sunday in the 29th and last place on the grid.
