By private jet: BVB has its own DFB players picked up in the US

Mats Hummels is currently training in the US.

Borussia Dortmund has been forced to take an unusual measure in view of the trip to the US of its German national players. The Bundesliga club has chartered a private jet at its own expense for its professionals Mats Hummels, Niclas Füllkrug, Niklas Süle and Julian Brandt. The plane should return the quartet to Germany earlier than would have been possible if they had traveled with the rest of the DFB squad.

Background to the campaign: BVB will play Werder Bremen in the league next Friday – less than 70 hours after the international match against Mexico starts in Philadelphia on Wednesday. BVB described the appointment as extremely unfortunate. However, Dortmund refused to postpone the match against Bremen to Sunday because of Wednesday’s Champions League match at Newcastle United.

Völler is also dissatisfied

BVB confirmed the action to the Bild newspaper and at the same time tried to deflect any criticism. “The issue of sustainability is of great importance to us as a club,” it said, but by planning the match against Bremen we are “exposed to a special situation.”

The players’ performance has the “highest priority”. In addition, Borussia “in principle compensates our team’s air travel with recognized certificates. This is how we act in this case.”

DFB sports director Rudi Völler previously reported that he was also bothered by the planning of the competition match. This is not good and certainly a wrong decision.” But even “many phone calls” between Dortmund, DFB and rights holder DAZN did not bring a solution. “That is not a happy thing, it could have been prevented,” said Völler.
